Govt told to explain SC/ST panel chief's term extension

Last Updated 17 February 2011, 15:55 IST

The petitioners Karnataka Valmiki Nayak Maha Sabha and others had moved the High Court challenging the action of the State government in extending the term.

The petitioner alleged that Olekar, being a sitting MLA from Haveri, was too busy in his constituency and was unable to concentrate on his job as the head of the commission. He submitted that Olekar had neither toured the State nor submitted any report.

Chief Justice J S Khehar sought to know why the State decided to extend the term and observed that it was similar to appointing a government advocate who would not argue throughout his term.
