<p>The State government has procured two aerial ladders at a cost of Rs nine crore to fight infernos effectively. <br /><br />One of the ladders can work at a height of 52 metres, enabling fire-fighters to rescue occupants of a building up to its 17th or 18th floor. <br /><br />The other aerial ladder can reach up to a height of 32 metres. It can rescue occupants of buildings up to 10 or 11 floors. <br /><br />Speaking after inaugurating a fire station at Kaikondrahalli on Sarjapur Road on Saturday, Home and Transport Minister R Ashoka said the department had taken up modernisation work aggressively.<br /><br />“The advantage of these Volvo-make aerial ladders is that water can be pumped up along the ladder, and we can deploy them in a matter of seconds,” the minister said. <br />The 52-metre ladder has been procured by the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, and the 32-metre ladder by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation. <br /><br />The second ladder will be deployed in Hubli-Dharwad, the minister said. The State government has procured three advanced rescue vans, three medium rescue vans and 12 water tenders for use in North Karnataka. <br /><br />The ladder and rescue vans have been purchased under the North Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Sector Investment project, he added. <br /><br />Inspection</p>.<p>With the first anniversary of the Carlton Towers fire tragedy coming up on February 23, the State government has formed 10 teams to inspect fire safety measures in high-rise buildings across the State.<br /><br />Director General of Police D V Guruprasad said the teams would conduct the audit of all fire equipment and preventive measures in all high-rise buildings. <br /><br />The teams, comprising officers of the department and owners of buildings, will inspect buildings, including malls and public utility buildings periodically and alert owners on the measures to be taken as per the guidelines, he said. <br /><br />Seven more stations<br /><br />Guruprasad said that the new fire station would take the number to 13 in the City. <br />The state-of-the-art fire station, constructed by Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India (CREDAI)-Karnataka, can accommodate over five fire engines and is equipped with a gym, rest room for officers, quarters for staff among other resources. <br />Guruprasad said the State government had given approval for seven more fire stations, work on which would start shortly. <br /></p>
