Aranmula Ponnamma dies at 96

Veteran actress and a well-known mother figure in Malayalam films for a long time, Aranmula Ponnamma , 96, died at a private hospital here on Monday evening.

Known for her innumerable roles as the mother of the leading character, Ponnamma had played mother to three generations of actors. In 1996, she received the state and national awards for best supporting actress for her role in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Kathapurushan as well as the J C Daniel Award for lifetime achievement in 2006. Starting her career in1950, Aranmula Ponnamma has acted in over 500 films. The body will be cremated here on Tuesday.
