To commemorate C V Raman’s discovery of the Raman Effect, The Oxford College of Science recently celebrated the Science Day.

The day was dedicated to the spirit of science and Dr Raman’s discovery, which is relevant even today as it banks on indigenous talent and capability.  The day started with a speech from Sambasivam Ganesh, Chief Scientific Officer, Anthem Biosciences, who lamented on the blind rush for engineering and medical courses among students even as he enlightened the students on aligning with the needs of the industry.

“Talented students can also opt for the basic sciences,” he said. In his address to the student and teaching community, the Executive Director of The Oxford Educational Institutions, stressed on the need for quality research while simultaneously pointing at the importance of punctuality and hard work.

The day was lined with activities which brought out a variety of issues.

It saw students participate in events like debate, sudoku, lecture contest, poster presentation, draping, circuit analysis, portfolio presentation, quiz and extempore.
The debate was extremely lively with the topic being, Biotechnology Products : Boon Or Bane? The keenly contested event had the students coming up with a number of valid arguments which made it difficult for the judges to decide on the winners. All the speakers mentioned Dr C V Raman in their speeches.

Over 500 students, including both the UG and PG students of the college, participated in the different events.

The poster competition had the students creating posters on a number of raging issues like climate change and smoking.

Even the lighter events like collage and face painting had themes relating to nature in various forms, and received an enthusiastic participation from the students.

Another interesting event was the model-making competition. Students came up with models of a blood purifier, fibre optics communication, automatic control systems and many others.

These grabbed a lot of attention from everyone involved. The quiz had the students fighting for the correct answers of questions regarding physical and life sciences.

Even the mathematics department was not to be left behind and organised a sudoku competition.

The fashion students of the college also had a lot to look forward to. The draping competition was all about presenting a drape with their own fabric. The portfolio presentation was all about colours, outlooks, themes and trend predictions. In all, 60 prizes were given away to the winners of various competitions in a day full of activities.
