Curtains down on Sugama Sangeetha Sammelan
The audience at the Kalamandira swayed to soothing music on the concluding day of the Eighth Sugama Sangeetha Sammelana, ‘Geethotsava 2011’, here on Sunday.
Hundreds of music lovers thronged the venue in the evening to listen to some of the greatest songs composed in light music form, and see their favourite artistes sing for them. Nearly 800 people were treated to a musical extravaganza throughout the day.
The weekend began with group song by singers trained under veteran singer B K Sumithra and Srinivasa Udupa. Noted singers Jyothi Raviprakash, Sowmya Upadhyaya, M V Ananth Kumar, Sridhar Aiyar, Udaya Ankola and Archana Udupa presented a show, ‘Chithrageethegallalli Kannada’ enthralling the audience with some of the best light music songs from the cinema music.
Interaction
It was followed by a serious deliberation for about two hours on the ‘Limitations of Sugama Sangeetha and New Possibilities,’ where noted litterateurs and connoisseurs of music participated. More than 20 singers took part in the Kavana Vachana - Gayana, rendering the best poems of noted poets.
The ‘Chinnara Gayana’ by a team led by Vrunda S Rao and Indrani Ananth Kumar and group song from artistes of Hassan, Mangalore, Chikkamagalur, Mandya and Davanagere mesmerised the audience.
Down the memorylane
Noted singers H R Leelavathi, B K Sumithra, president of the two-day Sammelan Shyamala Jagirdar, Somasundarama, T V Raju and others took the seniors among the audience down the memory lane with their old songs in the section, ‘Haadu Haleyadadarenu Keli Namma Haadu’. The Sammelana witnessed a colourful end with a dance ballet by danseuse Dr Vasundhara Doreswamy.
In his valedictory address, writer C P Krishna Kumar said that the Sugama Sangeetha was an art. Light music singers should innovate and experiment with new songs, the writer and the poet, he opined.
Poet Channaveera Kanavi, Y K Muddu Krishna, president of Karnataka Sugama Sangeetha Parishat, secretary Kikkeri Krishnamurthy, member secretary, Kannada and Culture department K N Annegowda were present.
