Mysore Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) retired officer Rashid is all set to take the seed of Mattu Gulla and grow it in Lakshadweep.

Lakshadweep which is known for coconut cultivation has similar weather to that of Katpadi, Mattu and Kaipunjalu in Udupi district where it is grown in abundance.

After testing the soil from Lakshadweep and Mattu, he feels that Lakshadweep has conducive weather for growing Mattu Gulla.

As there are ships sailing to Lakshadweep from Mangalore, the seeds and the fertilisers can
be easily transported, Rashid feels.

He says “after getting the yield in Lakshadweep, we can think of collecting seeds for Mattu Gulla in Lakshadweep itself.”

GI certificate

Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai is all set to issue Geographical Indication Certificate to Mattu Gulla. The Mattu Gulla Growers’ Association is likely to get the certificate by the month end. With this, the Gulla growers who were demanding patent to the Mattu Gulla will beam smile on their face.

The Geographical Indication Registry has given GI Registration Number- 199 to Mattu Gulla. The Geographical Indication Registry will hand over the GI certificate to Horticulture department, Bangalore, which in turn will hand it over to the Mattu Gulla Growers Association at the earliest, said Udupi Horticulture department official.
