Trafficking or adoption, SC questions Centre
The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the Centre on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a group of NGOs, including one led by Padma Shri winner Nomita Chandy's Bangalore-based adoption agency ‘Ashraya’, alleging government's inaction on trafficking of children to foreign countries in name of adoption and response to Indian parents’ bid for it.
A Bench also directed the Central Adoption Resource Agency to file a reply on the petition alleging that the children were preferred to be given to foreign couples instead of the Indian parents.
The official adoption in 2007-2008 was only 3,264 while millions of other children remained in sub-standard institutional care or were unaccounted for, the petition claimed.
