Check dam, canal in danger
Residents of Haradi oppose urbanisation project
The taluk has witnessed several activities in the name of urbanisation and real estate that have given rise to a feeling of anxiety among the residents.
There is no better example for such negative 'development than the water canal connected to the Busnalli tank in the taluk.
Construction work has begun near the canal, which flows down from the hillock in Haradi, as well as near the check dam built by the Mining and Geology Department.
This has led to slow destruction of the water sources, leading to further problems related to water in the already drought-ridden region.
Going the wrong way
The canal was constructed to help rain water flow down the hillock in Haradi into Busnalli tank. Water coursing outside the village too flows into this canal. The check dam was constructed in 2004-05 at an expenditure of several lakhs of rupees.
But the construction work on the road from Haradi to H Cross is destroying both water sources, said the concerned citizens. “The officers, as usual, ignore the conditions. If immediate action is not taken, both the canal and the check dam will be destroyed without a trace,” they complained.
Important sources
Youth leader Taraballi Bhaskar Reddy reminded that crores of rupees are spent to desilt the tanks. But the Main Canal (Rajakaluve), ponds from which water is supplied to tanks, streams, et cetera are extremely important sources of water.
Projects that change the conditions of such sources in the name of urbanisation should necessarily be opposed. “If not, the current water problem in the district will only get amplified, making life hell for the residents,” he advised.
