Commuters want Bus Day facilities everyday
The Bus Day observed on Wednesday received a mixed response from the public on all the 12 arterial corridors of the City - Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Sarjapura Road, Hosur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Mysore Road, Tumkur Road, Kanakapura Road, Bellary Road, Magadi Road, Thanisandra Road and Hennur Road.
While some passengers lauded the government for the novel idea, many felt that making special provisions for people only once a month won’t make much of a difference. The regular commuters say the problems regarding the bus facilities in the City have to be seriously considered.
“There are no direct buses to the outskirts of the City,” said Devendra Prasad, an employee at IBM, who considers the bus facilities in Mumbai and Chennai far better than those here.
To lessen pollution
On this day, everyone in the City is expected to leave their personal vehicles at home and use public transport. The concept has been introduced not only to promote public buses, but is also an attempt to reduce pollution in the City.
“The use of buses will reduce pollution and traffic in the City,” said Vanajaksha, a conductor of a Volvo bus, adding that many officials used the buses only because it was compulsory on Bus Day.
Conductors and drivers are at their politeful best on this day. Shivakumar, a conductor, said that the new concept could save a lot of petrol and that the provision was presently utilised mostly by senior citizens.
