The Karnataka Janapada Academy has urged the government to establish a ‘Janapada University’ to study the rich folk culture and art of the State.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of experts in folk culture, academicians and members of the Academy here on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Academy Chairman Go Ru Channabasappa said, a resolution was passed at the meeting about the need to establish the university. Copies of the resolution would be presented to the CM, Cabinet ministers, MPs and Legislators soon, he said. By establishing the university, specialised research activities in folk culture, crafts, music can be given priority, he said and added that the university can be a model for others to follow in the country.

Folk culture needs a push in today’s industrialised and globalised world. One needs to go back to the roots and essence of the age old traditions and customs, and pass it on to the new generation, he added.
