The case came to light after a thief broke into the professor's apartment and tried to blackmail him after finding pornographic images of children stored on a computer.
The professor reported the blackmail to authorities.
Prosecutors alleged the professor not only downloaded and saved thousands of photos but also engaged in making pornographic photos of children.
