BBMP to rope in private schools to promote RWH
Worried over the depleting groundwater table, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to launch an extensive drive to promote rainwater harvesting in the City.
After declaring 2011 as Water Year, Palike has planned to rope in all the private educational institutions in Bangalore to tap rain water to recharge groundwater table.
Meeting soon
A meeting with the chiefs of all the educational institution would shortly be convened requesting them to set up the RWH system on their premises.
“We have asked our zonal commissioners and the revenue officers to submit the list of all the educational institutions, which are spread in more than one acre of area, to the head office. A formal letter will be sent to the institutions to participate in the meeting and help us translate our plans into reality,” said a source.
The BBMP has decided to offer technical assistance to set up the RWH system in the institution premises. Focus would be more on areas where water table has gone down drastically, the Palike sources said.
It is noteworthy that the Palike has proposed to install RWH structure at its head office at a cost of Rs 45 lakh.
Nearly ten crore litre of water in the Palike office at Hudson Circle goes down the drain annually.
The Palike commissioner has directed all the zonal commissioners to install RWH system in their office buildings.
