‘Popularise language to get recognition’
Madikeri hosts two-day Kodava literary-cultural convention
Kodava is a language and not a sub language. When the language is made popular, it will get its recognition, said Kendra Sahithya Academy Secretary Agrahara Krishnamurthy.
Speaking at a two-day Kodava literary-cultural convention organised jointly by Kodava Sahithya Academy and Kodagu district Kannada Sahithya Parishat, he said every language should preserve its identity and uniqueness to make the language strong. Though the number of Konkani speaking people is less, Konkani is the administrative language of a state.
“All of us should strive to protect the language,” he appealed. He said the number of languages found in India is not found anywhere in the world. Language has its own history, cultural background. Every language has a sub language. Hindi has 37 sub languages. India is the laboratory of languages.
Krishnamurthy said 20 languages have been included under eighth schedule of the Constitution. The Kendra Sahithya Academy has identified 24 languages and recommended for the eighth schedule of the Constitution.
Mangalore University History department Chairman Dr Kodeera Lokesh Monnappa inaugurated the convention. Kodava Sahithya Academy President Rani Machaiah presided.
