Maran on sticky wicket after JPC summons

Last Updated 07 June 2011, 19:46 IST

He has been already accused of deliberately delaying awarding licences to a private firm for 2G spectrum during his tenure as telecom minister.

In what appeared to be a further blow to Maran’s position in the cabinet, the prime minister’s letter asking his cabinet colleagues to declare their assets made references to their (ministers) business dealings. “Assets, liabilities, business interests, conduct and management of any other business and employment of spouses and dependents…are required to be disclosed,” the letter mentioned.

Informed sources pointed out that is a setback to Maran whose family controls the Sun media empire.

The conglomerate has been embroiled in controversy as reports claimed that the subsidiary of the Malaysian company that benefited from Maran’s decision to award 2G licence made investments in the Sun network in a quit pro quo deal.
