No takers for science stream

Chamarajanagar, June 16, DHNS

Lack of facilities

Students have hardly enrolled for the science stream started by 11 government pre university colleges this academic year.

The state government had given a green signal to start the science stream in these colleges last academic year but admissions were started only in the current year due to the shortage of facilities.

The science department has been started in the government PU colleges of Kabba Halli, Terakanambi, Kuderu, Santhemarahalli, Venkatayyanachatra, Beguru, Lokkanahalli, Chandakavaadi, Hangala, Bandalli and Sathagala each having a capacity to admit 100 students. The admissions in the colleges of Kuderu and Santhemarahalli have reached double digits, but none of the other colleges have got even a single application for the science stream causing worry to the District Pre university board.

The Pre university and vocational training department has ordered the admission of students for the science stream but have taken no measures to appoint teachers for these colleges. Laboratory facilities have also not been provided in these colleges. Due to these reasons the students are hesitant to join the science stream. The science stream has been introduced for the rural students who are hesitant to join the stream as they have studied in Kannada medium throughout. This is also a reason for the low admission for the science stream.

The PU board officials said that teachers will be appointed and laboratory facilities will be provided once colleges show that students have enrolled for the science stream. The order to start science stream was given the previous academic year itself but no facilities have been provided for the colleges till now. Parents also complain about the lack of infrastructure in some colleges where PU classes are held in the high school premises.“Students have enrolled for arts and commerce streams but have not enrolled for the newly started science streams,” said DDPI Chaluvayya. He said that the needed faculty will be appointed for the colleges where the science stream have been started.
