Chennai plunges into darkness

Chennai, June 30, DHNS:

Many parts of Chennai went without electricity for several hours on Thursday evening, as a major transmission line feeding power to the metro had tripped.

The city experienced a blackout with even traffic lights going off due to the power crunch. This is an addition to  an enhanced two hour power cut being enforced in the city for 10 days till July 7 by rotation.

Though in the last two years Tamil Nadu has been reeling under a severe power shortage, forcing Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to enforce a 40 per cent energy cut on high tension industries and 20 per cent on low tension units, the crisis was a big issue in the recent Assembly polls.
