Competition results: Sunday Herald Short Story 2011

This year, we received a total of 517 entries, and the entries kept pouring in even after the specified deadline. The standard of the stories was well above average and the judges had a tough time arriving at the winners.

The panel of jury for the competition comprised well-known  Bangalore-based authors — Monideepa Sahu, Srinath Perur and Shefali Tripathi Mehta.

A columnist and writer, Monideepa Sahu is the author of Riddle of the Seventh Home. Her short fiction for young people and adults has been published in  several international literary collections.

Srinath Perur’s short stories have appeared in the anthology, Why We Don't Talk, and in various print and online magazines. While his stories have won several prizes, his essays and articles have appeared in various renowned magazines.

Shefali Tripathi Mehta is the author of the humorous book, What Were They Thinking! She has published short stories and poems in several anthologies and journals.

The prize-winning stories will be published in the subsequent issues of the Sunday Herald.

Meet the winners of the Sunday Herald Short Story Competition, 2011.

FIRST PRIZE
Rs 30,000
Ayesha Aleem, for her story titled, ‘In Search of Home’.

Ayesha, 24, is a master’s degree holder in journalism from Boston University who loves to write. A correspondent with India Today in Bangalore, she has worked for Elle magazine, Lowe Worldwide and publications in the United States, where she briefly reported on US Congress in Washington DC. When not writing, she enjoys watching movies, travelling and tasting new cuisine. She has spent most of her life in Bangalore and loves the concept of one-by-two coffee and lazy Sunday brunches. She lives in the city with her husband.

SECOND PRIZE
Rs 25,000
Anitha Murthy, for her story titled, ‘Silence’.

Anitha, 44, is a lazy dreamer, pretty content with life. A software consultant by profession, she likes to spend time with her family and friends, and loves reading and writing. She has been published both online and in print, and dabbles in varied genres.



THIRD PRIZE
Rs 15,000
Sreelakshmi Sharma, for her story titled, ‘A Sudden Streak of Lightning’.

A native of Kerala, Sreelakshmi, 20, is training to be a doctor in Bangalore. Though her medical studies keep her quite busy, in her free time, she enjoys reading English poetry and classics, especially Pablo Neruda, and penning poems and short stories.
