People will revolt against corruption, warns Akbar
Volcanoes of public anger against corruption and autocracy might erupt in India, as they did in the Arab world, if corrective measures are not taken, journalist M J Akbar has warned.
Speaking on corruption at the installation ceremony of the new office-bearers of Rotary Club of Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday, Akbar said it was very easy to blame the usual suspects, but corruption was not just about exchange of money. Akbar, who had a brief stint in politics after he won a seat in the Lok Sabha in 1989, rued that the expenditure on contesting elections had risen exponentially. “India’s successful economy also contributes to corruption.” Akbar supported a strong Lokpal Bill, but warned against vesting “so much power in one institution”.
Earlier, Srinivas Murthy was installed as new president of RCB. Pandurang Potnis is the District Governor and Chander P Mannar the new secretary. Other office-bearers include Purnima Ranganath, Zarir K Batha, Rosa Paramel, Sanjay Udani and Dinya Langrana.
