Train accident: Anxious relatives throng Chandigarh railway station

Chandigarh, July 10, (IANS):

Worried relatives of the passengers of the Kalka-bound Kalka Mail that derailed in Uttar Pradesh Sunday killing at least 35 people, thronged the Chandigarh railway station to make inquiries about the safety of their kin.

However, railway authorities were still collecting details and had no concrete information.
"A total of 98 passengers were travelling towards Chandigarh in Kalka Mail. 43 of them were travelling in AC coaches while remaining were in sleeper coaches. I have compiled the data of their names and addresses," Station Superintendent Parveen Kumar told IANS.

"We are in constant touch with higher railway authorities. Right now we have no information that whether any of these 98 passengers is among the injured or has died.

Exact picture will be clear in the next couple of hours," he added. At least 35 people were killed and more than 150 injured Sunday when 14 coaches of the Kalka Mail ran off the rails in Uttar Pradesh, leaving many passengers trapped in the mangled mess.

The incident happened at Malwan in Fatehpur district, some 150 km from Lucknow.

Chandigarh railway station has set up helpline numbers 0172-2639785 and 2658924 to assist the relatives of the passengers who were travelling by this train.

"My friend was travelling in this train. His phone seems to be switched-off and railway authorities have no information about his whereabouts," said Mahender Singh, one among the people waiting at the railway station.
