Sea erosion intensifies in coastal districts; gruel centres set up

Hanumanthappa Adiveppa Kari (65) was killed in a house collapse at Devagiri in Haveri taluk on Sunday. A child, Kavana, was rescued with minor injuries.

Fatima (72) was buried under the debris when her house collapsed in Srimangala, Kodagu. There have been reports of partial damages to several houses in Virajpet, Somwarpet and Bhagamandala. River Cauvery is in full flow raising the level in Triveni Sangama and inundating roads.

A woman escaped with minor injuries when a tree branch fell on her house in Taltarashettihalli of Somwarpet.  A big tree fell on Somwarpet-Madikeri route affecting the movement of vehicles for the entire day.

Chinnappa Gowda (50) was washed way while crossing a vented dam in Kalledikatte of Sullia, Dakshina Kannada. Rain pounding the coastal districts uprooted several trees and electricity poles. River Nethravati has reached maximum level in Dharmasthala.

Sea erosion has intensified in Udyavara, Katpady and Kodibengre in Udupi district. Flood water has gushed into houses in Kadekaru, Saligrama, Giliyar, Kavadi, Uppur, Neelavara, Bannadi with Seetha and Madisalu river overflowing. Sauparnika river in Kundapur has entered low-lying areas, submerging the fields.

Karwar

Rain continued to pummel Uttara Kannada district continuously for three days, flooding several villages in Honnavar and Kumta taluks.

Following incessant rain from Thursday night, landslide was reported on National Highway 63 in Yallapur taluk.

Rivers Gangavali in Ankola, Aghanashini in Kumta, Badagani and Gundabala in Honnavara are flowing above the danger mark.

Around 110 families in Kurve and Dandebhaga villages were rescued as their houses were marooned. A gruel centre has been opened at Shedikatta and Hichkada Government Schools. Halavalli, Kalleshwar and Heggar villages have turned into islands with roads under water.

Ankola Tahsildar Udaykumar Shetty said six gruel centres have been opened at Gundabala, Hebbail, Nathageri, Kadageri and Kenchagara where 95 people have been sheltered.

Rescue operations have continued in Uppinapattana, Bogribail, Alakoda, Hondada Akkala, Karkimakki, Kudle, Antravalli, Harakade, Divagi,Kaire, Mirjana, Aigala Kurve, Teppa and Hegade.

Nearly 400 people have camped in the gruel centres at Divagi, Manakona, Harakade and Kaire. Vehicle movement came to a grinding halt for over seven hours due to landslide on NH-63 that links Ankola and Gooty in Andhra Pradesh.

Shimoga

Yadur in Hosanagar taluk received a record rainfall of 423 mm in a single day. Hulikal received 387 mm and Mastikatte, 339 mm of rainfall. Rivers Sharavati, Bhadra, Tunga, Kumadwati, Varada and Dandavati were in full spate.

Power generation was halted after land behind the Four-Bay Power Channel slid. A portion of channel was under the debris hindering flow of water to the channel and posting a breach threat to Sirur tank.

Karnataka Power Corporation Chief Engineer Hanumanthappa said the sullage collected in the channel will be let into Sharavati through the silt gate and power generation will resume in two days.

The Mahatma Gandhi Hydro Power Station has been Kgenerating 10,000 million units per day in the three of its total eight units.

Holiday for schools, colleges

With the Meterological Department forcasting heavy rain for the next 24 hours, holiday has been declared on Monday for schools and colleges in Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts.
