Microsoft clarifies
Software major Microsoft on Monday clarified that its representative did not suggest 'amendment on open standards' but rather said, 'There are fewer merits in mandating a single standard since it restricts choice for the customer, as well as reduce the incentive for competition and innovation by the industry'.
Meanwhile, advocates of open standard have stated that the idea of open standard is not to be confused with open source software.
For example, in case of document formats, one standard could be a open document format (ODF). Proprietary software can still conform to open document formats.
Thus mandating open standards does not close the door on proprietary software companies.
