These activities for different age groups, talents, hobbies and interests, will be on till February 2012.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Bal Bhavan Society Secretary Shashikala U Shetty said, August onwards, Bhavan’s Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium will screen children’s films every Saturday and Sunday between 2.30 pm to 6 pm.

Bal Bhavan will also provide a platform for child artistes to showcase their talents. Groups of four to five children each can perform in front of the public and overcome their stage fear.

Besides, workshops on art, dance and activities such as painting, crafts, clay modelling and theatre will be conducted. Also, children from government and corporation-run schools will get an opportunity to visit Bal Bhavan’s Science Park. The Bhavan will provide buses to ferry them. This will instil scientific temper among them as they get to know the mechanism behind toys and inventions displayed at the park.

The Bhavan’s library will be thrown open to children and their mentors. Child experts can use it for story-telling sessions, besides inculcating library and reading habits among children.

The Bhavan will invite children’s tribal art and folk art troupes from across the State to exhibit their talent. Coinciding with Children’s Day, the Bhavan will conduct State-level inter-school dance and song competitions for presentation of Kalashree awards and pick talented children for national-level Balashree awards.

The Bhavan, Shashikala Shetty said, had been granted Rs five crore by the Women and Child Development Department.

The Department has taken over the management of the four mini-Bal Bhavans in the City - at Jayanagar, Jeevanbima Nagar, Coles Park and Rajajinagar, she added. The district and taluk-level Bal Bhavans will also be strengthened to enable them to take up non-formal education initiatives like in Bangalore. Further, in association with Karnataka Nataka Academy, it will organise theatre activities and workshops, on the lines of Rangayana in Mysore, for children.
