Bhagavad Gita should be optional, opines litterateur CPK
Grants provided for the Kannada language should be utilised
Litterateur Dr C P Krishnakumar opined that teaching Bhagavad Gita should be optional, but never be made compulsory.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on research in Kannada organised by Kannada Sahitya Parishat at JSS Womens’ Degree College here on Tuesday.
He explained that a few words in Kannada have been drawn from Sanskrit. But Sanskrit is being neglected. It is important to read the Bhagavad Gita, but it is not necessary to make it compulsory.
Observing that research shouldn’t be based on assumptions, he emphasised to conduct research based on facts. There is a need to increase the number of workshops in Kannada, he added.
“Kannada has a long history. It is our duty to help the language grow,” he said. After Kannada was awarded the classical language status there is no shortage of grants. It should be utilised in an optimal manner. There is a relation between study and research.
Researchers should ensure that mistakes aren’t repeated in their work. New aspects should be highlighted, he added.
Research shouldn’t be taken up based on statements made by others. The truth should be unearthed and workshops serve as a platform to present those facts, he said.
People are attracted to English because of the advantages it provides in business. There are also a lot of mistakes creeping into Kannada. He bemoaned that due to the excessive usage of telephone, letter-writing has taken a backseat.
District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president A M Nagamallappa, JSS Womens’ College principal Prof M D Pushapavathi, vice principal A G Shivakumar, JSS B Ed college principal Prof Basavaraju and others were present.
Valedictory of the workshop would be held on July 27. Litterateur Prof Maleyuru Guruswamy will deliver the valedictory address. Deputy commissioner K Amaranarayan would distribute the certificates.
