Rekindling fond memories
Alumni Meet
For the old students of Garden City College, it was a special event as the batches of the previous years were present at the ‘Reunion Day’.
The mood at the alumni meet was one of enthusiasm and was laced with fond nostalgia.
The present students of the college and the organising committee ensured that it served as the perfect reminder of the years gone by.
The alumni meet was a day-long event which started at 10 am. But what was special about this years’ meet was that they combined it with a visit to an old age home.
This was followed by a friendly, fun-filled 12-over-cricket match. Says Aravind Thondan, a student from the 2004-2007 batch, “We wanted this game to be between the management and the alumni. But then we ended up playing with each other.”
The formal ceremony started at 6 pm and the celebrations went on till 9 pm. The three-hour event saw various cultural performances. The old students shed all inhibitions and like the good old days, shook a leg to various Western classical and Bollywood numbers and enthralled the audience.
The fact that they were no longer in college didn’t seem to bother them as they blended well with the college atmosphere they had once known. Coupled with these entertaining dance events were the musical performances. What made it heartening was that the students of the present batch also joined the old students. This was followed by a ‘jam session’ wherein the alumni took to the stage to dance impromptu to a song that was played.
Apart from this, a few games were also conducted for the families of the alumni. The programme culminated with a lavish dinner party. All the ex-students present there were in a jubilant mood as they got to meet old friends. Kingshuk Sarkar, a student of the 2011 batch, presently runs his own company.
He, like many others, feel that alumni meets are the best way to bond with old friends and also teachers. He says, “All the students from my batch are placed in different companies and are spread all across the country and abroad. We do catch up with each other on the different social networking sites. But due to our hectic work schedules and different commitments, we do not get to talk to our old friends that often, leave alone, meeting up with them. So this day is a perfect occasion where we can all gather at a single place and revisit all the old memories spent in the college.”
Aravind says, “Alumni meets are of great importance for the students as well as the institution. It gives us a chance to meet old friends and come back to our alma mater which has given us so much. For old students who live abroad too, this is a special moment as they do not get to come back to college that often.”
