India, Australia to strive for students' safety abroad
India and Australia have agreed to take joint measures to enhance the safety and welfare of the students in their respective countries.
A decision to this effect was taken during the first meeting of Indo-Australia Education Council here, attended by vice chancellors of various universities from both the countries on Monday.
The meeting was co-chaired by Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal and Australian Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Jobs, Senator Chris Evans. Premier of South Australia Mike Ran also took part in the meeting.
On the issue of the security of Indian students in Australia, Sibal said that two countries had a “full-fledged” discussion on its.
“We have put in place measures and have worked hard with the Indian High Commissions to address the issue. I think Indian government may rest assured by the range of measures taken by us,” Evans said.
A new bilateral Australia-India Education Links website was launched by the two ministers as an information portal to support further education and training collaboration between the institutions of the two coutries.
The website provides information on the roles of Australian and Indian education bodies, and hosts key reports.
Sibal said that a whole range of issues were discussed between the vice-chancellors of both countries to ensure that quality education is imparted in the university system to allow student mobility. “This is not about generality but about putting in place a framework through which student mobility will happen in years to come,” he said.
“The other area where both countries are extremely keen to collaborate is in the area of vocation.
