Dinosaurs, mermaid and cartoons to steal the show

Steep increase in number of participants; Thai arts to make debut

The glasshouse in Lalbagh is decked with flowers. Gardeners are busy decorating the glasshouse for the 10-day-long horticulture show beginning on August 7.

 The show last year attracted nearly 3.5 lakh people resulting in ticket collection to the tune of Rs 45 lakh. The organisers are expecting over 6 lakh people this year. The special attractions of the event include 300 varieties of flower plants,  dinosaurs, mermaid and cartoons. Entry tickets will be available at all Hopcoms outlets.
 
Horticulture Department director N Jayaram, in a press conference, said there were 650 participants for the show in  2008. This year the number had gone up to 825. The participants include various agencies of the Union and State Governments.

Jayaram said for the first time, the Thai arts would be introduced in the show. Experts in the art form would display aeroplanes made up of banana leaves. Flower dinosaurs would be a major attraction in the show. It would consist around 50,000 flowers of different varieties. The director said that total investment for the show would be around Rs 50 lakh.
