‘Plans for a Kolar district free of water crisis’
Minister gives account of projects in various stages of implementation
Social Welfare Minister A Narayanaswamy has called upon the elected representatives and officers to take a pledge to make India free of corruption.
Speaking after hoisting the National Flag at the district stadium on Monday, he said: “The comprehensive development of the country is possible only through corruption-free administration.”
Instead of reading a printed copy of the speech, he chose to focus mainly on the drinking water problem.
Speaking to reporters after the event, he said a project for bringing water from River Cauvery has been accorded approval in principle and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board has also cleared the proposal. Steps will be taken to prepare an effective report for submission to the World Bank, seeking funds for the project.
A scientific study will be taken up to address the drinking water crisis due to dried-up borewells and depleting underground table.
‘Forest to be used’
The forest land required for the Yaragol drinking water project will be converted into revenue land soon, the minister said. The issue was supposed to come up for discussion in the Cabinet meeting, but was deferred due to change of guard in the government. It will be tabled at the Cabinet meeting again on August 18, he added.
Another solution for the crisis, the community drinking water project, has already been discussed with Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar.
The minister said the hostels for the students of backward communities are in deplorable conditions and soon, they would be set right, he added.
