Vijender slips from top spot
Star Indian boxer Vijender Singh on Friday slipped from the top spot in the world rankings, ending up eighth in the latest list, but the Olympic bronze medallist still remains the best-placed from the country across all weight categories.
The 25-year-old, who took the top spot in the rankings soon after his Olympic bronze in 2008, lost it to arch-rival Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan.
Atoev has 1200 points due to the gold he won at the 2009 World Championships, during which he beat Vijender in the semifinals.
Amandeep Singh was ranked 11th in light flyweight (49kg) with 600 points.
In the bantamweight 56kg division, Shiva Thapa has risen to 11th with 600 points.
While the 19-year-old has risen in ranks, the experienced Akhil Kumar’s name was missing from the bantamweight list altogether due to his first-round exit from the 2009 World Championships.
