ZCCK trains organ transplant coordinators

Last Updated 29 August 2011, 18:22 IST

The training holds significance since the coordinators mediate between doctors and family members whose loved ones have been declared brain dead, and it is mandatory for all licensed hospitals to have one.

The training conducted along with Mohan Foundation aimed at sensitising and giving complete training along with practical case studies to 60 transplant coordinators, including some from other states too.

“Usually, the training programme is conducted by National Diseased Donor Transplant Network and the transplant coordinators have to travel to outside the State. So, we thought of doing it right here in the City,” said ZCCK secretary Dr D Ramesh.

The coordinators broach the subject of cadaver transplant to the brain dead person’s family, coordinate the transplant and counsel the family. Krishna Nandi, a transplant coordinator of Columbia Asia Hospital, Kolkata, said post the five-day training, she was equipped to deal with the legal issues that arise during a cadaver transplant.

Reeva Barneto, a transplant coordinator from Goa, said her hospital had recently received the licence and was planning to set up a separate section, and hence, the training was timely.
