‘Education should instill values such as discipline and character among students’
CSIR scientist emeritus Dr V Prakash opined that it would be more meaningful if Teacher’s Day, freshers’ day and parent’s day were held simultaneously.
He was speaking at the freshers’ day programme organised at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in the city on Monday.
Dr Prakash said there should be a good relationship between parents and educational institutions. In order to understand children, it is important to have constant contact with the college.
Discussion between parents and teachers is absolutely essential. Parents should know the progress of their children after entering professional courses, he added. He also told students to ensure that they pursue research.
Karnataka State Open University vice-chancellor Prof K S Rangappa said improving a country’s economic and social status was possible only through education which should instill values such as discipline and character in students. Also, it should cater to the demand for scientists in the country.
Prof Rangappa said there were a lot of opportunities available for students opting for engineering.
However, they need to understand the details of their course and parents should also be involved learning more about the programmes, he added.
SJCE principal Dr B G Sangameshwar said the college provides a conducive environment for research. He said more than 80 companies visit the college campus for recruitments every year.
JSS Mahavidyapeetha technical director Prof M H Dhananjaya, Dr Shashidhar, Prof Anandamurthy and others were present.
