The house belongs to suspended IAS officer S S Verma, who was commissioner-cum-secretary of the Minor Irrigation Department before the vigilance sleuths raided his residence and unearthed huge unaccounted assets.

Nitish had been reiterating at all his public meetings about the promise to confiscate the ill-gotten property of corrupt officials and open schools for poor children in their palatial house.

First official

Verma is the first government official against whom action has been taken ever since the Nitish regime passed the Bihar Special Court Bill 2009.

What is unique about this new legislation is that it gives the state government much-needed leeway to confiscate the property of corrupt officials in the midst of the trial.

Till now, unless convicted by the court, the state government was not empowered to confiscate the ill-gotten money of corrupt officials.

Verma’s house was confiscated by the Patna district administration officials after the suspended IAS officer failed to get relief from the court. A notice pasted on the wall of the building read: “The Patna district administration takes the possession of this property on the order of the additional district and sessions judge VI-cum-special vigilance court  II designate in special confiscation case No. 03/2010.”

The vigilance raided Verma’s house on July 6, 2007, and recovered moveable and immoveable assets estimated to be over Rs 1.4 crore, which were disproportionate to his known source of income.

If on Tuesday, the Cabinet clears the proposal for opening a school for poor children in the confiscated house, it would be the best gift for them (kids) to mark the Teachers’ Day.
