UN body to empower women netas in State

The agreement was signed   by Dr Amita Prasad, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, and Sushma Kapoor, Regional Programme Director, UN Women.

To encourage women to contest elections, steps will be taken to create a more supportive legal framework to reduce the threat of violence against them  in politics, to promote economic empowerment and to change the patriarchal mindset of society, said Prasad.

The programme will be launched in Dharwad and Mysore on a pilot basis. The Abdul Nazir Sab State Institute for Rural Development, Mysore, will function as the State-level nodal agency while the UN Women will engage a district programme officer in each district to assist in the implementation of the programme.

As many as 1,773 GP women members, 90 TP members, 24 ZP members in Mysore; and 861 GP members, 43 TP members, and 12 ZP members in Dharwad will be trained under the programme scheduled to begin in November.
