Katta diagnosed with cancer
Former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu has Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphoid tissue, a report submitted by the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the Victorial Hospital has revealed.
Appearing in the Special Lokayukta Court on Saturday, Dr Kantharaj Jain, the RMO, said that after performing a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan on Katta, the surgeons had advised against conducting a cervical discectomy for treating his severe back ache.
This was because the scan had revealed that his cancer had spread to the colon and a surgery would be inadvisable at this stage.
The medical reports and opinions of the neurosurgeon and physicians were also submitted to the court.
Dr Jain submitted that Katta had been receiving treatment for cancer through an operation in 2004 and chemotherapy in 2005 and that he had undergone a stem cell transplant at London in 2008. “That is where his stem cells are stored,” the doctor submitted.
Further, the doctor said the cancer was spreading and Katta should be put on a treatment regime on the advice of oncologists.
An appeal is now likely to be made in the court seeking permission to treat the disease.
Katta had been remanded in judicial custody in the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board scam, after being indicted by the Lokayukta. He was later admitted to the Victoria Hospital after he complained of severe backache.
The court had accorded permission to the medical authorities at the hospital to conduct a scan and inform the court whether it was necessary to perform a surgery, known as cervical discectomy, on Katta.
