Treated cruelly by wife, techie ends life
R Venkatesh, Bangalore, DH News Service:
Inflicting cruelty is no longer the Indian male's preferred means to cause pain or suffering on a spouse.
Allegedly hounded by a greedy and cruel wife, who was fully supported by her parents, a 32-year-old techie ended his life by consuming a full bottle of anti-depressant tablets here on Monday.
Shubhankar Katyayan was married to Nandini, 27, also a software engineer, for the past two years. Their marriage was registered and solemnised here. Although the two hailed from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, they had been working in Bangalore after their arranged marriage.
The couple had taken up a rented house at Rajajinagar. They worked for different multinational software companies. Before Shubhankar left for the United Kingdom on a company assignment early this year, he was happy to learn that Nandini was pregnant.
Soon thereafter, Nandini also left for an overseas assignment.
She returned to India a couple of months later and left for Jamshedpur to live with her parents. Shubhankar and Nandini were in touch over e-mail. But, differences cropped up when he failed to return to be at her side during delivery.
But, Shubhankar managed to take leave and returned to Jamshedpur to see his newly born son, Purunjay. Recounting the events prior to Shubhankar’s death, a close relative told Deccan Herald: “Soon after returning to Jamshedpur, Nandini and her parents began ill-treating him.” Shubhankar allegedly fell at their feet, begging to let him see his child.
Though later he was allowed to see their son, his in-laws convinced him to return to Bangalore on the assurance that Nandini would follow soon. He found to his consternation that his in-laws had taken a separate house for Nandini on rent on Gangadhar Chettiar Road under Commercial Street police station limits.
Since their marriage was floundering, the couple decided to settle for a mutually agreed upon divorce.
Shubhankar’s lawyer Anand said the divorce petition (MC1732/09) was filed on June 24, 2009. In the judicial separation petition posted for hearing on January 1, 2010, Nandini had claimed Purunjay’s custody and return of all gifts she received at her wedding.
On July 14, Nandini’s mother Anmana Jha lodged a complaint with the Commercial Street police, alleging that Shubhankar, demanding dowry, had assaulted and attempted to kill her daughter. A number of criminal cases were also lodged against him. He was arrested and produced at the magistrate’s court on July 19. The magistrate directed the police to investigate the matter, and he was sent to Parappana Aghrahara Central jail. Anand said Shubhankar was virtually a broken man in jail and had undergone treatment. Last Saturday, he consumed a bottle of anti-depressant tablets. The authorities rushed him to Victoria Hospital in a critical condition where he died. The authorities refused to hand over the body till Nandini gave her consent. Finding her house locked, the police allowed the release of the body.
A day after the body was taken to Jamshedpur for cremation, Shubhankar was granted bail. His parents, Sunkantha and Narmada Devi and his younger brother, Diwakar, were granted anticipatory bail. When this correspondent met Nandini at her residence on Tuesday night, she said she would not comment on the issue without consulting her advocate.

Aruna is saying no woman go for police untill harassed. this is the main problem. how she know about every woman in world.
woman can for police for many reason.
1)Money.
2)Honey(lover).
3)Revenge.
And above all nobody die if he is not harrased.
This is traditinal approch that woman can not do wrong.this is the problem of misuse of 498 a law. why woman is not wrong? there is lot of crimianl woman also? it means they are also not wrong.
it should be investigated properly, only for not coming at the time of delivery wont create any differences between couples, since she also an IT girl, she would be knowing the situations better. So, it has to be investigated properly and find out the culprit and should be punished.
When men are harassed and media reports it, you ask for more investigation. But when women are harassed or claim to be harassed, you put men behind bars and talk about women being victims - no investigation at all. Is this the kind of equality you propound? You have double standards!
Really feel sorry for his parents , re;atives and his just born son.. HOpe someday sense prevails in our government and judiciary and work on aamending these draconian laws which are destroying thousands of families,, These laws like 498A and Dva are are more misued than used . Subhakarn soul may rest in peace..
Now the time has come for the lawmakers to change the dowry law which was written keeping in mind the fact that the deprived harassed and tourchered women in our indian society should no more be victimised But it is now misused in many places and now in number of cases males are victimised now and a very cruel example of it we are witnessing here This incidence raises many questions on the part of our administration also How Shubhankar got an anti-depression tablet in jail Are the jail authority supposed to provide these medicine inside the jail Why police did not investigated into the matter like questioning the nabours or the owner of the house where he was residing before taking him into judicial custody and sending him behind the bar Shubhankar would have earned a nice money on his overseas assignment So hand of Nandini and her parents can not be ruled out behind this incidence Just because Shubhankar could not come from abroad to see nandini during the delivery there were so much hatred developed for him in his wife family It is a very strange and very fishy A thorough investigation should be done in this case so that people do not dare to take undue advantage of the law
at the end of the day, its always a women who walks away wtha smile on her face what ever may be the situation or the result.
the main problem is the mind set in the society which tells women to be viewed as sitadevi, sati savthri ect( how many follow is not applicable ), but what the society forgest is ramba, urvashi, maneka, apsara, suranapanaki, ect were women too .
the comcept in mind set is women can do no wrong and all wrongs are done by men , women are weak and need support ect in my personal view its all crap. women are mentally and emotionally more strong then men in all walks of life they are not scared of wrong doing , even if done have the skills to slip away putting the fault on mans head.
the law says only man can do it women cant do it
A true reflection of what the pathetic indian judicial system is, it contradicts itself yet cannot update its laws to bring into the modern era. Laws are made for protection, when an event like this occurs with dates proving the womans claims and cases are false any sane repsected person can understand who is right and who is wrong. This woman should be put behind bars...oh but in india women cannot be arrested everyone is too scared of women rights...what about mens rights!
Men Are Oppressed Too! The oppression of men is an extremely complex phenomenon to understand. It has always been hidden, disguised, indirect, Innumerous, severe, carefully conspired and going on for thousands of years. Above all, it’s carefully and forcibly unacknowledged.
Today, it would be seen as ’startling’ and ‘unbelievable’ at the best and outright ‘ridiculous’ and ’scandalous’ at the worst to talk about man’s oppression. It’s not easy to see even the misery and pain of men, even when it is extreme.
It is so well hidden not only from the world but from the man himself. It’s just not acknowledged. No place for it in the society. No value for a man’s tears. Tears are ‘feminine’. The mechanisms of man’s oppression are just as invisible as his tears.
Once you are sensitized and you learn to look beyond what is ‘obvious’ and you slowly start witnessing it all. The first things that point to the size and nature of these invisible mechanisms are the extraordinary and intense pressures that the society (or rather a section of it) exerts to sustain or strengthen the mechanisms.
The masculinity with which boys are born, is natural masculinity. This is given by nature. However, society has created a mechanism whereby it does not acknowledge this natural masculinity. It has instead created its own version, which we shall call ’social masculinity’.
Social masculinity is not naturally endowed, but has to be granted by society. Society does not accept a person as a ‘man’ unless he fulfills certain preconditions of roles or expectations of society, referred to as ‘male gender and sexual roles’, or ’social masculinity roles.
A person is not considered a man without social manhood. This social mechanism is designed to control male behavior, especially male sexual behavior. The result is silent severe oppression of men.
Some of the “Social Masculinity” Roles are:
1. Men don’t have any emotions. They should suppress their emotions and problems.
2. They are rough and tough and should NOT complain about women.
3. Men are expected to be physically tall, strong, and brave.
4. They are supposed to protect and provide women.
5. They are supposed to make sacrifices, even sacrificing their lives, to protect and provide women.
6. They are not supposed to have weaknesses or vulnerabilities. They must not show feelings as these would make them appear weak or vulnerable.
7. They should always be willing to fight their way and defend their families. They should not return from a fight.
8. They should not have any feelings.
The result is that men are far more prone to heart attacks and stroke. Their life expectancy is some 5-6 years less than women, worldwide. Similarly, the social construct of manhood makes them NOT to complain about women, even if their women are causing them grievous hurt!
Women’s education is subsidized and a lot of support systems exist for them to open shop. While men are paying 82% of taxes in India and are denied any kind of support systems. Yet, it is men who are supposed to provide for women. Every year, 3 times more men commit suicide than women and yet there are no support systems or even laws to protect men.
All this is happening in a society that claims to have dumped the earlier traditional roles and concepts of gender and has women working in all fields and having more constitutional rights than men!
It is high time that men are liberated from their traditional roles and their masculinity is redefined based in natural masculinity and NOT with the kind of contradictions stated above. Men have always been considered as disposable and have been taken for granted.
It is high time men understand that are NOT privileged and have been suppressed too!
It is really a irritating news. The wife and her parents must be seriously punsihed to stop recurrance of such incidents. Our law makers never apply mind while making laws, this is really ridiculous.
Without the proper investigation how can a citizen be punished by mere a complaint from a female like in this case.
The techie in this case seems to be sensitive and respected man, while the wife is inhuman and mannerless.
Her parents too must be equally held responsible for the incident.
That is the reason, why every man must keep the wife under control and beat her if neccessary. The woman has been made by a uneven(Bent Rib) rib of man by The GOD the Almighty.so to make it straight there should be an action.
The Indian legal system is one of the most archaic in the world..with laws written in 100 over years ago still on the books. Most of the laws will fail if put to test against the fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution.
Counteless number of innocent people have suffered by these laws. Yet our politicians have done NOTHING for the past 60 years to set right these inhuman laws.
If these is one thing that India need most, it is a full, complete overhaul and review of the Indian penal codes, laws, the Judiciary and legal system by competent efficient people with a definite time frame.
If this is not done, I can tell you this. Indian democracy is a farce and will remain a farce. The only people to whom democracy exist are the politicians and self righteous MPs that are mere time wasters and no conscience.
In this case, 10% of the blame goes to the girl and her family. 90% goes to the so called Indian fake democracy and supportive legal system.
Congrates to the comments made by Mr. Shivaji, John, Naveen, Pasha & Kss. The law enforcement agencies should start thinking before it is too late. Never register a case unless it investigated. Innocent men are the targets. Womens are taking undue advantage of the Anti Dowry Law which favors womens. Please scrap it before it is too late.
Do not blame the law agencies.
The fault is with the government law makers, who have done NOTHING to change 100 year old British colonial laws that have absolutely no place in a democracy.
Why are these laws there. Because the Indian netas and babus care a damn and prefer the status quo. So there has been no reform in the legal system. The innocent get punished by the guilty, as per the laws that exist today in the Indian legal system. It has become rotten and stinking. Yet nothing is being done even after 60 years.
Its very sad to hear this news,Ladies think tht best way to escape frm judiciary is to file dowry case against husband, but most cases filed against husbands are not right so i request our judiciary to investigate the matter bfr putting man behind bars because it ruins a man life,All cases of dowries files by women against husbands are not genuine,I feel the judicairy made him to commit suicide and our judicairy is responsible for the death of tht innocent person.
Only a complete investigation will tell what happned. Some people seem to suggest here that 1 death of a man is equal to 1000s of women who have died due to sheer harassment. It is easier for a man to leave his wife than for a woman to do so in a patriarchical society like India. However anyones death due to harassment of any kind can not be condoned. Both women and men in India need to learn and understand that what ever their differences are, making a child pawn in their sqabble is both cruel and unjust. A child does not ask to be born in the situation it finds itself in such an environment. Husbands and wives who sqabble and fight infront of their child both need to understand that they are subjecting a child to a torture and self doubt for the rest of its life. Both need to be held accountable. Grandparents of both sides need to keep out of unless there is physical and verbal cruelty involved. India needs to learn emotional maturity in handling these situations especially there should be no fault divorce and 50:50 settlement whihc will save both courts time and save children from being subjected to emotional trauma. This issue is not going to go away. Gender war needs to stop and co-operation need to occur. Parents who dmage their children also damage future generations.
Assuming that women go to police only when they are mentally tortured sounds reasonable. The problem is many women have a crazy notion of what mental torture is. They often forget that they are the ones inflicting torture. Unfortunately, the Law is designed to support the woman without consideration for who is inflicting torture. We have to see if there will be a fair and free investigation without the women activist groups wailing for more "protection" and "freedom" to continue this abuse.
Just because of the guy died, one cannot blame
his wife alone unless proper investigtion is done. No wife will go to police statioin unless
she faced mental torture by husband/inlaws.
Women are not morally superior to men in anyway....they have all the weaknesses that men have. You seem to suggest that women cannot commit mistakes and can never lie.
Really heartening to see the plight of mental trauma & turbulence which led this guy to kill himself. This law - Dowry Harassment has always been misused in this country. He could have led his own life without his wife - after all his life is something he got from his parents and God. Law should take action of such cruel women who take undue benefit of such sections in IPC and pain husbands. This woman must be hanged - her parents sent behind the bar for lifetime and the little baby boy should be given to the parents of the guy who gave his life!

Where is the ladies association everyone is silent when a man dies they no one. Why no Dharna from ladies now sit near a Govtoffice,Opp gandhi statue ask for justice wher is this now. Cut throates
This is a product of foreign direct inventment and cash from abroad which brings values of selfishness and greed and ego along with it. Educating children in english as convent and modern education seeds the evil values of possesive and selfish attitudes and replacing the age old values of Maryada in our society. As old continue to disappear more english medium educated youth will appear and more and more amoral people will appear along with it with more disorder in our society. Let us thank Mr. Manmohan Singh for initiating and facilitating the
policy of renting India to foreigners for cash from abraod and with that money also comes evil values like discos, pubs and night clubs closely associated with money like including Lust, anger, jealousy, ego among youth and some good like transfer of technology from abraod to bring more cars and pollute the air and pollute the water ias happening now.
I think there will be a solution for all the problems, the lawmakers have to make a good law regarding this rules, so that it would be helpful for good peoples who are suffering.
Indian law is very flexible to criminals literally her parents and the girl are the criminals ,law says when a woman registers a case it should be handled immediately without any question and if a man registers a case it will be overlooked there will be many questions
there are dos and donts unfortunately if they start overlooking the woman registered cases ,the woman who are really getting ill treatment will suffer because of such women so there is no solution for such cases what i feel is a lesson should be taught to such women .
While there are innocent women victims for whom our laws should protect, at the same time strict action should be taken against those who misuse it. We are hearing many cases of abuses with the help of law such as 498A.
IHRC? You must be joking. It is better to commit suicide than to go to them. By the way, suicide is not about cowardness. It is a state of of hopelessness and disgust one experiences around him that overshadows the light we all see ahead of us.
Crores, and crores of men in India are being ill treated by their wives. Some reveal it out while others keep quiet because of the false prestige. Several men are walking dead not knowing what to do with the insult. The implementation of law favours women. Men are mostly victims. In this case it seems that Shubhankar Katyayan paid the ultimate price for the attrocity of his wife. Let the govt pass several more strict laws hurting men like in several western countries. Now, women in the west are like minorities with meagre income, and are single. Nobody is prepared to marry a woman unless she has very good income. Nobody wants to speak about it. It is not a long way for Indian women to stay single without adequate support. Poverty will become the norm of the day for women following stricter laws. The law in India has affected the family life, and will affect women in the long run. My prayers are with the family of Shubhankar Katyayan. May his soul rest in peace?
Yes you are right; In fact if these marriages break down before kids, things will be simple. Most of the time female and her parents become strong, rude after a kid. Because they know that things can not break so easily and it is time make any thing out of that situation. Our laws and nature supports mother as a default care taker of kids. This will be is used by females and their parents and the same will weaken men. If couples are intelligent to they should take advice from elderly people who are not part of their near family. If required they should make or break before kid. Because, in India, kid with out father name attached to him is hard to leave.
The problem is that young women, and in many cases men, in India are being rasied without any sense of respect for family. When the only thing we can respect is Money and the only God we accept is Greed, abuse and misuse of the Law of the Land is only a means to achieve their ends. It appears that the politicians profit by keeping such Laws operational.
It is misuse of law by the girl and their family. Instead they killed a life for which they should be held responsible. The Indian laws are one sided and police do not take action until it is too late. It clearly shows the wickedness of the girl and her family and they should be punished for this crime.
It is very unfortunate our law only protect females. There are thousands of innocent husabands suffering in the hands of their wives. Our police and judiciary is a mockery and once they are in their uniform they are the almighty.Cruel and humiliation areated by the police in our country is nothing but a shame. They are corrupt and uncouth and they have to taught manners and expose them to the world and train them properly. They think cain and iron bars are their own and use them without any senses,
my dear friends even i am also the victim made by my in-laws & wife for no reasons
i am suffering for past 8 years, she is leaving with her parents but not giving me divorce or come back and stay
i have my aged parents whom i need to take care & this was told before marriage that only. they agreed there is no one to take care since i am working
the reason for my wife she used to pressurise for going to work for which i objected this was the main target & one day she walked away without asking me & my family
this is the torture i have been gone to police, vanitha sahayavani & the matter is pending in court & she is not taken the notice by giving false messages to all the authorities
so any well wishers who can help me to find a way pls let me know so that i can over come from this harassement
Totally agree, such abusive women must be punished first. And men should be brave, not a coward like this poor guy. my condolences, but would have been happy if she was given what she deserved in the first place, including her bitchy parents.
Why fishy?? This sounds like a true news. Many such news do not turn up in newspapers since it does not fetch anything. It is high time all ill treated husbands get together and fight these bitches.
As always there are 2 sides to a story, this case should be investigated thoroughly and the lokayukta should monitor the case and make sure the police investigate the case in an unbiased manner.
Yes, there are many sides to a story. But why only this case? Even in opposite cases, and when women cry about being harassed, there should be many sides to those stories. Then why only this case? Why not talk about "Other sides of the stories" in reverse cases? Why are you thinking that when allegations of women harassing men are reported, they may have other sides of the story? Are women above human weaknesses? Are women above the law?
