<p>Reacting to the submission by the Bescom before the KERC seeking to hike the tariff due to increased cost of power purchase following the reallocation of power by the State government, M G Prabhakar, Chairman, Energy Commission, FKCCI, said the Government has no role in disturbing allocation of power purchased from various sources as provided under tariff order 2010.<br /><br />Costlier power<br />He said there is nothing on record to state that the water-level in hydel reservoirs were lower than previous year to justify the Bescom’s claim to purchase costlier power between January and June.<br /><br />Bescom Managing Director P Manivannan said: “The interruptions in power supply are mainly due to load-shedding. The Bescom is forced to buy extra power at high cost only to meet the demand during the peak hours,” he said. <br /><br />He said the procurement policy would be changed too. A committee, comprising experts from the Indian Institute of Science and the FKCCI, will oversee the procurement of materials such as transformers and cables to ensure quality, he said. <br /><br />He said that the Bescom would submit the safety standard report by the end of September. He said Rs 200 crore was being spent on improving areas deemed hazardous. KERC chairperson M R Srinivas Murthy suggested that such activities should be taken up in rural areas where the number of accidents was high compared to urban areas.</p>
