Indian expats to form Indian Theatre Club in Singapore

"We are now working on a proposal to have a formal Indian theatre group, as a follow up to the successful staging of a play last week," said Nishtha Kharb, a regional corporate lawyer with Phililps Electronics (S) Ptv Ltd.

Ms Kharb, along with her husband Shantanu Shukla and friends, staged their first play "Lights Out" on September 17-18 and proceeds from which were donated to a local school for blind children.

The "Lights Out", though adapted to Singapore environment, was first played at the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai in 1982, said Kharb, who is now looking for another play to stage next September.

"The group aims to promote more cultural activities by adapting some of the internationally acclaimed scripts and involving actors from the Chinese, Malay, Eurasian and European community living in Singapore," said Kharb, who graduated among top lawyers in 2002 from the Amity Law School, New Delhi.

"Our first play has received strong support and encouragement from the Indian High Commission in Singapore, Philips and the State Bank of India (SBI)," said Kharb who hails from Delhi.

"Following the play, we see there are a lot of opportunities to give back to the society and contribute to the cultural scene in Singapore," she told
