‘Make higher education accessible to all’
Devaraj Urs University celebrates first convocation
It is essential to create opportunities for everyone to have access to higher education and it can be made possible by erasing the gap between city and rural areas, said Banaras University Vice-chancellor Dr Lalji Singh.
He was addressing a gathering at the first convocation of the Devaraj Urs University at Tamaka, on the outskirts of the city, on Saturday.
Few candidates
“It is disturbing to note that the number of candidates opting for higher education in the country is considerably low. However, by the end of 11th Finance Plan, the overall percentage of higher education in the country must register at 15 per cent and 27 per cent by the end of 12th Finance Plan,” he added.
Onus is on educational institutions to bridge the gap. Financial assistance should be increased for higher education to attract more people, he suggested.
He was of the opinion that universities must network with industries to ensure job avenues to graduates. He called upon the researchers to be pro-society also rather than just being academic in their work.
Devaraj Urs Higher Education and Research Institute president R L Jalappa presented gold medals to outstanding students. Vice-chancellor Dr S Chandrashekhara Shetty and Registrar Dr A V M Kutty were present.
