CIIL to host Sino-Tibetan languages meet
The Central Institute of Indian Languages is hosting the 44 th international conference on Sino-Tibetan Languages and Linguistics in Mysore from October 7 to 9.
This is for the first time the conference is being hosted in India,and in Mysore. Twenty-three scholars from USA, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and China, and 47 scholars from India who have specialised in languages of Sino-Tibetan family are participating in the conference, according to a press release from the institute.
The Sino-Tibetan family of languages is the largest group of languages spoken in India, in the eight North Eastern states and the Himalayan region. In fact, it perhaps, has the largest representation in India.
One of the primary activities of the institute relating to its work on tribal languages is the work on a package comprising a phonetic reader, grammar, dictionary, folklore and, where necessary, adult literacy primers. The institute had undertaken such work in 25 or so tribal languages of north east India. The development of tribal languages in India involves many issues of policy, implementation and academic contribution, the release added.
