Strong quake hits Argentina
A 6.2 magnitude quake struck northern Argentina on Thursday, centred some 139 kilometres from the city of Salta, US geologists said.
The temblor, which had a depth of some 9.4 kilometres, struck around 8:12 am local time according to the United States Geological Survey, which monitors seismic activity around the world.
The quake-prone region has seen a great deal of seismic activity in recent years, including a 5.9-magnitude earthquake off the coast of neighbouring Chile last month, just 123 kilometres from the capital Santiago.
Chile was also the location of last year’s mammoth 8.8 magnitude quake which unleashed a deadly tsunami which killed more than 500 people.
