Couple’s suicide baffles cops

Panaji, October 8, DHNS/Agencies:

Anand Rathi Dev (39), a software professional and his wife, Deepa of Bangalore, who were found hanging in their flat on the outskirts of the city, wrote in the suicide note that they were ending their lives because they had ''lived a very eventful and happy life together'', but police say they are mystified by the reason for the suicide.

The note, purportedly written by the couple went on to say that they believed in the philosophy that their life belonged to them alone and they “had the right to choose death as much as they had the right to live” and they had travelled the world, made money and lived life to the fullest.

However, the police, investigating the suicide, are not ready to apply closure to the case. That the couple kept mostly to themselves and that they travelled extensively makes them ponder. “The couple led a highly reclusive life and never mingled with the neighbours.

Little is known about what Anand was doing”, a senior police official told Deccan Herald.

Anand had severed relations with his parents, living in Tamil Nadu, nearly 10 years ago.

Police said Deepa, homemaker, was in regular touch her parents in Bangalore and news of the deaths was communicated to them first.

Anand had quit his job as IT lecturer in the Goa Institute of Management some four years to return to IT field. But none of his former colleagues knew as to what he was doing after quitting the job.

The police ruled out any foul play and said the couple could have committed suicide on October 3 as the note was signed on that day. They had to break open the doors on the intervening night of October 6 and 7 as the neighbours complained of bad smell coming from the apartment.

“We found two nooses and the bodies hanging from the ceiling. The door was locked from inside. We do not suspect any foul play”, the official added. The official said that the post mortem has confirmed that the death was by hanging.

As the aged parents of Anand expressed their inability to travel to Panaji and claim the bodies, the police would perform the cremation. The couple had set apart Rs 10,000 for performing their last rites.

Recalling the sequence of events, the official said after finding the suic ide note, the police got in touch the parents of Deepa in Bangalore. Deepa’s parents in turn communicated to Anand’s parents about the tragedy.
