‘Udupi to get Syntheric track soon’
2,500 athletes taking part in Karnataka State Junior and Senior Athletic Championship
Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya said that the State government has taken measures to promote sports in the district, by giving nod for the laying of synthetic track at the cost of Rs four crore.
Speaking after inaugurating the 28th Karnataka State Junior and Senior Athletic Championship-2011 held here at Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium on Thursday, he promised that in the next five years Udupi will be transformed into a full-fledged sports centre capable of hosting national and international level championships. However, the private persons should come forward to support the government programmes.
Chief Minister had laid foundation stone to the swimming pool during his last visit to the city, he added.Renowned athlete Ashwini Nachappa recalled her memories of her visit to Mangalore way back in 1987 for an athletic meet. She said Mangalore is always known to encourage sports activities and sports talents. She called upon participating athletes to get into the field with courage and determination. Nachappa urged the athletes to be clean without consumption of any sort of drugs to boost the energy. More athletes should break the their previous records, in Udupi.
About 2,500 athletes from across the state are taking part in the competition. About 240 competitions will held under various categories.
The championship was preceded by colourful procession that started from Board High School grounds. The teams that took part in the march past parade comprised of SAI Madikeri team, Arjun Track and Field Bangalore, DYSS Mysore team, DYSS Bangalore team, ITC Sport Club, Bangalore and Udupi district team.
