Yeddyurappa case: Congress advises Advani to end yatra

New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS)

The Congress Saturday said Bharatiya Janata Party's senior leader L.K. Advani should end his anti-corruption yatra after the party's former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was jailed in a graft case.

Congress general secretary B.K. Hariprasad said Advani undertaking his Jan Chetna Yatra when Yeddyurappa has been jailed exposed the party's "duplicity".

“It clearly exposes duplicity...He (Advani) should stop and put an end to this hypocricy,” he said.

Hariprasad said the government in Karnataka was “illegitimate” as it was formed after a fractured mandate in 2008 polls.

Congress spokesman Manish Tewari also took a dig at the BJP, saying Advani's yatra should have been flagged off from Bangalore and not Bihar.

Advani has embarked on a 38-day Jan Chetna Yatra across the country on the issue of corruption, which will end in Delhi next month.

Another Congress spokesman, Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the warrants against Yeddyurappa were "an appropriate comment on actions of the party".

"It took the BJP two years to remove him. BJP could not muster courage to remove him and he went out on his own terms. The BJP always backed his case. It is an appropriate comment on the actions of the BJP. This has brought out true face of the BJP," Singhvi said.

Yeddyurappa, the BJP's first chief minister in south India, quit July 31 after the then Lokayukta (ombudsman) N. Santosh Hegde recommended his trial for graft in illegal mining scam.

He was jailed Saturday after a Lokayukta special court rejected his bail plea and issued a warrant to arrest him. He is also the first accused in two cases of illegal land denotification for monetary gains.
