Data Recovery Centre to come up in Madurai
Pre-empting the threat of data loss, a ‘Data Recovery Centre’ (DRC) to ''mirror and capture'' all the data bases will be set-up in Madurai soon as part of the Tamil Nadu government’s e-governance project. This makes the state the first in the country to have such a facility.
The ‘DRC’ will serve as a back-up facility in the wake of any ‘cyber mischief’ or accident that could erase 1.07 crore data bases consolidated so far at State Data Centre (SDC) here, a core infrastructure to implement E-governance as per the National E-Governance Plan, Dr Santosh Babu, the State Information Technology Department Secretary, said on Saturday.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was receptive to the DRC idea and immediately sanctioned Rs 60 Crores for the project given its strategic importance in taking forward E-governance, Dr Santosh said, inaugurating a workshop here on ‘Cyber Challenges’ – Cyber Law, Cyber Crime, Data Security and Related issues- organized by Computer Society of India (CSI).
With the expanding state-wide network, most government services ranging from acquiring community certificates to filing FIRs in police stations would be available online for citizens in three to six months, Dr Santosh said.
In the pilot project implemented in Krishnagiri district, people could now apply for their community certificates on-line and take a print out themselves without having to visit the Government offices, he said.
Already, 40,000 such certificates have been delivered on-line in that district.
E-governance would thus be an alternative that would substantially reduce administrative corruption as citizens interaction with the Government offices gets minimal and the processes of obtaining various certificates get automatic and transparent, he pointed out.
On the other hand, E-Governance would ‘maximize’ Government’s interaction with the people by delivering services without citizens having to actually come to a Government office.
