Downpour brings out worst in city
Pitiable conditions
The heavy downpour in the Chamarajanagar recently has brought the city’s problems to the fore.
Roads now explain the harsh reality. The choking drains, uncleared garbage, stray pigs welcome the visitors. The public are living in fear of epidemic outbreak any time.
Lack of pourakarmikas in the city municipal council has resulted in the unkempt city as it has become difficult to lift the garbage, especially in layouts once in a week. Now, the rains that lashed the city had added misery to the people.
The works on solid waste management unit is yet to complete. Meanwhile, the CMC has shown interest towards the ‘Nisarga Runa’ technology being adopted at the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre.
It is also planning to set up a biomethanisation unit of one to two ton capacity, which is also been recommended by Directorate of Municipal administration.
But ironically, the underground drain works are still at the stage where the tender is being invited.
The CMC has decided to handover the maintenance of ward 1 to 9, 11 to 23 and 26 to contractors and a action plan has been prepared at a cost of Rs 76 lakh and permission has been given for the same at the CMC meeting.
Funds amounting to Rs 35 lakh earmarked for maintaining city for the year 2010-11 and additional funds from CMC funds would be utilised for the purpose.
Lakhs of rupees are being spent to maintain cleanliness every year, but it has become an impossible task for the administration as there is no proper awareness over the same among the people. Moreover, no steps have been taken to appoint pourakarmikas for cleaning the city and also to take up awareness jathas on cleanliness and spread of epidemic.
The continuous rains have damaged the roads creating potholes inviting danger. Roads on Galipura, Buddanagara, Karinanjapura new layout, railway layout, Uppara beedi have not seen asphaltation since years.
Raju, resident of Buddhanagar says that the CMC has failed in providing basic amenities like drinking water and others and alleged that funds sanctioned for betterment of the city are being misused.
