Oppression forcing Tibetans to attempt suicide
At least seven cases of self-immolation bids by Tibetans in the recent months, four of them who later died, has left the Tibetan government-in-exile at Mcleodganj here in Himachal Pradesh rattled.
All were monks living in various monasteries in Tibet. In wake of the drastic steps being taken by Tibetans in China, the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile has planned activities in India and at various destinations across the world to highlight the deepening crisis in Tibet. on October 19, Tibetans across the globe will fast for a day.
The Tibetan government-in-exile said the Tibetan youths are resorting to these acts to resist political repression, cultural assimilation, economic marginalisation and environmental destruction. The fourth monk, 19-year-old Choephel died on Monday, said sources. All who committed self-immolation were in the age group of 18 to 29 years.
“We call upon all Tibetans and Tibet supporters to join efforts and organise activities in their respective regions. These events must be peaceful, respectful of local laws and dignified,” a Tibetan official said.
He said the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) at Mcleodganj will offer day-long prayers and encourage all Tibetans to fast on that day.
