Hungry Gill looking to make a mark in racing
‘Rallying separates the men from the boys.’ So believes Gaurav Gill, but circumstances make men do very different things.
The Team MRF driver has always been of the opinion that rallying is more challenging, given the different conditions one needs to operate in, but, after an illustrious career behind the wheels of a production-based rally car, the 30-year old driver from Delhi is seriously considering a switch to Formula cars.
“I really don’t want to pick and choose between rallying and racing,” said the two-time Indian National Rally Championship winner. “Both are challenging in their own right but rallying, for me, is way more entertaining. Come rain or snow we drive and we drive under all circumstances. I’ve always said rallying is more a man’s sport.”
Talking about the want to switch to Formulas, Gill said: “Let me make one thing clear, I have always enjoyed racing and I’m not new to single-seater racing. Going by the recent trends in India, it would be wise for me to move to racing. Racing has always got a lot of importance, and with us hosting the Indian Grand Prix, things are only going to get better.
Let’s see how things go. At the moment, I’m just focussed on the support race (MRF Formula 1600 championship) ahead of the GP.”
The Buddh International Circuit has been lauded by many as one of the best tracks in the world and Gill echoed their view.
“I went for a drive on the track and it is very challenging, which maks it great. It’s easily better than most tracks around the world, and primarily because of how unique it is. It’s an incredible concoction of fast straights finishing off with super slow corners, and to add to that there are some very interesting crests,” said Gill.
“Besides, a lot of corners are as wide as eighty metres but on the exit it narrows down to forty metres. All this makes for interesting racing conditions. We are all looking forward to it,” he added.
