8 docs in dock for rigging PG entrance test
The CID police investigating the irregularities in the entrance exam to medical postgraduate courses arrested eight doctors from Bangalore, Bellary, Mandya and Gulbarga on Saturday.
The arrested doctors are Dr Firdous Sultana and Dr V Sankeertha from Bangalore, Dr V Suresh, Dr Bharath Kumar, Dr Shilpa and postgraduation student Dr V Dhananjaya from Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) in Bellary, Dr Renuka from Gulbarga and Dr Bharathi from Mandya.
The four doctors arrested in Bellary were produced before the local court in the evening and have been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. Sources in the CID said the remaining four doctors will also be brought to the city and will be produced before the judge late Saturday night.
The main accused in the case, Dr K Vinayaka Prasanna, an assistant professor in the Forensic Sciences department, has obtained anticipatory bail. He has been placed under suspension since he was unavailable when the arrest warrant was served.
The arrests were made after the CID interrogated several doctors and clerks of the examination section. Seven candidates who wrote the exam in the same classroom at the VIMS ended up getting top ranks in the postgraduate medical entrance examination conducted on January 30, this year. All the seven candidates were either doctors from VIMS or their relatives.
The investigation was handed over to the CID after a few candidates complained about possible irregularities in the conduct of the exam.
