Foreigners celebrate fest of lights
While the whole of city was sparkling with Deepavali lights on Wednesday evening, it was a bit high in Senate Bhavan in Manasagangotri.
Foreign students pursuing degrees in various colleges here celebrated the festival of lights bursting fire crackers as part of ‘Deepavali Milan.’ The programme had been organised under the banner of World Organisation of Students and Youth (WOSY).
The students from Uganda, Iran, Kenya, TIbet among others attired in colourful dresses exchanged greetings, besides embracing the culture of the land.
With excitement writ large on their faces, foreign friends enjoyed the occasion bursting different types of fire crackers.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, vice-chancellor of University of Mysore Prof V G Talawar described the festival as a celebration of unity in diversity.
Though the nation has people belonging to different sects practicing their own culture and tradition, they unite for a common cause- by celebrating the festival. He advised the foreign students to take part in the festival, walking into the path of light from darkness. He complimented globalisation for bringing everyone together, and also technology that has bridged the gap.
Centre for Information Science and Technology (CIST) director Nagabushan, WOSY secretary Sanjeev and general secretary Kenneth and others were present.
