21 railway workers killed in road accident in China
At least 21 railway workers were killed and seven others injured when a vehicle they were travelling in overturned early today in northwest China.
The vehicle overturned near a mountain tunnel at the Manwa township in Lintao county of Gansu province, the provincial work safety administration announced in a statement.
It was unclear how many workers were in the vehicle when it overturned.
The tunnel was under construction as part of an ongoing railway project.
An initial investigation shows that the accident may have been caused by a brake failure, Xinhua news agency reported.
China has invested heavily on railway infrastructure to connect the vast country during years of strong economic growth.
But authorities recently suspended new rail projects after a collision between two high-speed trains in July killed 40 people.
