Acharya plans overall development
Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya said that plans have been chalked out to support overall development of the district. The Chief Minister has promised to release Rs 50 crore for the infrastructural development in the five Assembly constituencies of the district.
Speaking after receiving the guard of honour at 56th Rajyotsava celebrations here at Mahatma Gandhi district stadium, Dr Acharya said the DC Office complex built at Rajatadri in Manipal will be inaugurated by the end of November. Special plans have been chalked out to take up the work on widening of Udupi-Malpe road. Measures have been taken to provide shelters to the homeless and legal hassles involved in the process are being revised.
The State highways coming under PWD and other main stretches in the district will be repaired by the end of December, he added.
The subsidies offered to fishermen under housing schemes are increased up to Rs 50,000. Besides, they are offered financial assistance to buy vehicles for the transportation of fish. The diesel subsidies offered to the mechanised boats have been increased to 1,05,000 kl from 92,000 kl. The desilting works at Hejamadi port will be taken up at the cost of Rs 2 crore. As many as Rs 37 crore is invested on the construction of 3rd phase of Malpe harbour. The work is under progress, he added.
Dr Acharya informed that Rs 5 core is released for desilting and recharging of the lakes and tanks in the district. As many as 138 lakes and rivulets have been identified under the project. About 9,227 farmers are benefited under Suvarna Bhoomi Yojana. A sum of Rs 2.34 crore is deposited in the accounts of the farmers under the programme, he added.
Stating that the government has taken up promotional measures to support Yakshagana, Dr Acharya said a special award of Rs one lakh is constituted to be given away separately for the artistes of Badaguthittu and Tenkathittu. The award will be given from the next year, he added.
The colourful procession comprising the tableaux depicting the affluent cultural and historical traditions of Karnataka was organised from Board High School grounds. The procession culminated at the district stadium. Besides, march past by DAR police personnel, Home Guards, Fire Service Department personnel and Scouts and Guides added elegance to the celebrations.
